Six signs your cat is in pain

Cats are good at hiding pain, so the signs are usually small changes in routine rather than anything dramatic. If you notice two or more of these for a few days, book a consultation.

Hiding more than usual

A cat that suddenly spends the day under a bed or in a cupboard is often uncomfortable.

Not jumping

If they used to jump onto the worktop and now hesitate, or climb up in stages, the joints are usually the reason. This is common in cats over ten.

Grooming less, or more

A scruffy coat along the back can mean it hurts to turn round. Overgrooming one patch can mean the pain is underneath it.

Eating differently

Dropping food, chewing on one side or going off dry food often points to a sore mouth.

Missing the litter tray

Going beside the tray rather than in it can be a sign that stepping over the edge hurts.

Being short-tempered

Hissing or swiping when picked up, in a cat that used to enjoy it, is worth taking seriously.
