Keeping older pets comfortable

Dogs and cats over ten slow down, and it is easy to put everything down to age. A lot of it is arthritis, and arthritis can be managed.

Senior checks

We recommend a check every six months from ten onwards. It includes a blood and urine test to look at the kidneys, liver and thyroid, which are the organs most likely to give trouble.

Weight

The single most useful thing you can do for an arthritic pet is keep them slim. Half a kilo on a small dog is a lot. We will show you what a healthy shape looks like and help you get there.

Around the house

Non-slip mats on hard floors, a ramp for the car, a low-sided litter tray, raised bowls. Small changes, and they help.

Pain relief

There are safe long-term anti-inflammatories and, for cats especially, a monthly injection that works well. Regular checks keep an eye on the kidneys while they are on it.
